Human Rights Presentation
——No Torture
“The healthy man does not torture others, generally it is tortured who turn into torturer.” said by Carl Custay. Good morning ***o Re and fellow classmates. My name is Chrysta. I’m willing to give you a presentation about torture today.
On Feb 21st 2012, the US Appeals Court made a special rule. It rules that the dyed detainees’ families cannot sue. You may ask what happened, what makes them have such a strange rule, and why do the families want to sue? First, let me tell you something about the dyed detainees. These detainees are from the Guantanamo Bay. Guantanamo Bay is a detention camp which is controversial detainment and interrogation facility of Unites States located in Cuba. It has held at least 500 prisoners, and Al-Zahrani and Al-Salami were two of them, but they suicide. The families of the two detainees attempt to sue that the detainees faced cruel, inhuman treatment before their death, but the judges from Federal Appeals Court said that they lack the authority to consider the treatment under the Military Commission Act. “The court’s decision today means that men like them can be tortured and even killed at the hand of the U.S officials, and no court can have anything to say about it.” said by Spardiss Kebriaei, who argued for the families. According to the gradual investigation, the two detainees both had gone long time hunger strike to protest their degrading treatment. Now, the lawsuit represents dozens of detainees to protect their right.
Now, let’s think about why the detainees attempted to go hunger strike and even suicide. Look at this picture, you may get the answer. Imagine that if you were always in the dark, always be tied up, and always faced degrading punishment, what will you do? I hope the lawsuit can help the detainees get rid of the inhuman treatment.
Why the news is so impressing, I think it is because the human right is violated. According to the declaration of the human rights #5…..According to the Canada’s Charter of Human Right, part 1 #12…Torture not only can be with real pain, sometimes it can also be psychological, just like the next news article.
……
I found this picture from the internet. It can really show the condition and feeling of the detainees. They’re not only experiencing pain, also fear and loneliness. It could be a forever psychological trauma.
…What I want you guys know from my presentation is ALWAYS REMEMBER NO TORTURE AND STAND UO TO AGAINST TORTURE.
Here is the bibliography. Thanks for you listening. Do you have any questions?
