Mr. Sorrow, thanks for defending Yundi. Downbeat doesn't like him.I read his negative comments about Yundi here before. He is trying to use Fou Ts'ong to convice people that Yundi is no good. I don't know why so many people here are so unkind to Yundi, always trying to diminish him. His victory at The Chopin Competition has changed the world's perception of Chinese-trained pianists. He has proved that China can produce world-class pianists that are not just technicians but interpreters as well. Don't you think he deserves some credits for that? Eventhough you don't appreciate his music, there's no reason for you to step on him except for jealousy ( either about the 1st price or about the praises). As for Lang Lang, don't forget that he's US trained. Has he ever thanked his Chinese teachers for his success? Yundi's talent is recognizedby theWest, but not by his countrymen. How very strange! His performances in the US, attended by many music professionals, were well received. His CD, recently released in Europe,is getting good reviews. If you think Gramophone's review is promotion, how about BBC Music Magazine's good review? Or a good one coming out of Germany? For those of you who refuse to accept opinions from the West, doyou honestly think that you understand Chopin's music better than western music professionals? Do you think all those people can't tell the difference between a good pianist and a bad pianist? Yundi should not be compared with Fou Ts'ong, who's old enough to be his grandfather. Young people look at things differently from mature people. The same can be said about music interpretations. Howcan you expect a 19-year-old to play like someone 3 times his age? This kind of comparison is meaningless.Young Yundi should be compared to a young Fou Ts'ong, a young Rubinstein,a young Pollini, a young Zimerman.....Has anyone here heard how Fou Ts'ongplayed Chopin 50 years ago? If the answer is no, then no one should say FouTs'ong is better. A pianist can always change his interpretations, but he cannot change the sound he makes on the piano; this is a natural gift. When you listen to (if you're willing to) Yundi's music, put aside your prejudice and and pay attention to his sound. His playing is being praised by the West as "refined and poetic," where as Lang Lang is"powerful and brilliant." They are two pianists of two totally different styles. You can't say one is better than the other. For those of you who think Lang Lang is 10 times better that Yundi, I want to tell you that reviews of his recent performances in theUS are not so good. Of course, you can refuse to accept negative opinions about Lang Lang just like the way you refuse to accept positive opinions about Yundi, eventhough they all come from the West. Yundi is very young and he knows he needs to learn more. That's why he'sstudying in Germany. He's not in a hurry to get his name known like Lang Lang. Whether he'll become a great pianist or not, no one will know. But he has a lot of potential. If he works hard, he can havea bright future. We should give him some time and not make any negative judgement on him so soon.Young people need supportand encouragement. You're not helping them if all you say are negative comments.

I happen to know someone who is an accomplished pianist (Moscow Conservatory-trained) and music educator who won a Chopin medal herself in heryoung years. She was also a friend of the late Artur Rubinstein ( recognized as"the" authority in Chopin). She knows some of the judges at the competition, attended Yundi's recital in the US, and has listened to his album. Do you think someone like her knows what she's talking about when she gives high remarks about Yundi's playing? What I'm trying tosay here is: open your mindand pay some attention to other opinions in the rest of the world. But prejudice is such a big obstacle for some individuals here. Theyonly hear what they want to hear no matter what. I may be wasting my time topost these long messages here. I'm writing at this forum not because I think everyone should like Yundi.Music appreciation is very personal and subjective. You can choose to like or dislike any musician. I'm writing here because I feel Yundi is not being treated fairly by his own people. Lang Lang and Yundi are not rivals. Just because youlike one of them doesn't mean you have to dismiss the other. They can both make us proud. Mr. No More Sorrow, Yundi's live recording has been released outside Asia a fewdays ago. It's available at the online store www.amazon.com. I know a lot of music lovers like to collect live recordings of The Chopin Competition. Now they can finally get toknow why Yundi won the approval of the 23 judges
