Injured Nick Kyrgios ready to recharge and get back to his explosive best
      September 26, 2014 - 10:00PM
      Chris Dutton
Canberra tennis star Nick Kyrgios has revealed the pain in his left forearm was so bad that he almost could not hit a backhand shot at the Malaysian Open this week.
But Kyrgios hopes a 10-day rehabilitation program in Melbourne and then a solid training block in Canberra will help him overcome the bone stress injury to allow him to get back to his explosive best.
An exhausted Kyrgios will use the next month to recharge after admitting to being burnt out. He lost his opening round match at the Malaysian Open as he continued to battle the arm injury that has plagued him for two months.
"Although not at the stress fracture stage, it is bone stress which is very painful and needs protecting before it escalates into something worse and takes me away from the ATP Tour for longer," Kyrgios wrote in his blog.
"I was pretty gone after my singles ... I am unable to really hit a backhand. Hopefully I can be healthy to compete on the ATP this year, but for now I just want to get rid of this pain in my arm so I can go back to playing the type of tennis I enjoy.
"Playing injured sucks and is no fun at all."
An emotionally and physically drained Kyrgios said last week he needed a break to recuperate after his first full year of grand slam tennis.
The 19-year-old will almost certainly become Australia*s No.1-ranked player next year as he continues his remarkable rise.
But the world No. 51 has put his physical condition before the pursuit of rankings points for the rest of the year to ensure he is healthy for a "big 2015".
He has withdrawn from three tournaments, but plans to be back on the court to play in the new International Premier Tennis League, where he will join the Singapore Lions and team up with Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter and Serena Williams.
Kyrgios will not pick up his racquet for at least 10 days as he focuses on building a strong fitness base before returning to Canberra next month to work with coach Todd Larkham.
He is still down to play tournaments in Basel and Paris at the end of next month, but will only play if he has fully recovered from his injury and is mentally refreshed.
"As my career is still young, I am in no rush and have to take care of my body," Kyrgios said.
"I understand it [my body] is still developing and adjusting to the increased physical demands the level of tennis I am competing at demands and I have to listen to my body if I want a long, successful and sustained career.
"Playing injured is no fun and has stopped me from playing the type of tennis I love to play and I hope with a couple of weeks intensive rehab, rest and treatment I can get back to playing pain free, exciting and fun tennis."

        My plans
        September 25, 2014
Unfortunately I have pulled out of Tokyo and Shanghai due to an injury in my left forearm. Although not at the stress fracture stage, it is bone stress which is very painful and needs protecting before it escalates in to something worse and takes me away from the ATP Tour for longer.
Despite recent reports, I do plan on playing again this year and have only withdrawn from Tokyo and Shanghai at this stage, my schedule still includes Stockholm, Basel and Paris which I hope to be fit and ready to play.
As my career is still young, I am in no rush and have to take care of my body, I understand it is still developing and adjusting to the increased physical demands the level of tennis I am competing at demands and I have to listen to my body if I want a long, successful and sustained career.
Playing injured is no fun and has stopped me from playing the type of tennis I love to play and I hope with a couple of weeks intensive rehab, rest and treatment I can get back to playing pain free, exciting and fun tennis.
Thanks for your support and understanding.
