X FACTOR JOE: I'M GAY
31st July 2010 By Anthony Walton

X FACTOR winner Joe McElderry declared last night: “I’m gay.”
The 19-year-old singer added: “I’m really happy, I now know who I am.” Joe, who had always denied rumours about his sexuality, says he did not even realise himself until just three weeks ago
.
The teen idol, from South Shields, Tyneside said he told his mum a week ago. And she has pledged her 100% support – along with X Factor supremo Simon Cowell, 50.
Joe is certain his former X Factor mentor Cheryl Cole, 27 – who dubbed him “me little Geordie soldier” on the TV show – will also back his decision to come out. He said: “I’m so happy. It’s all been so recent to be honest.
“Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had time to think and come to realise who I am. I have grown up a lot. I know it sounds crazy but before then, I was so busy. “It hadn’t even crossed my mind. I only told my mum last week, on a train.
“She was fine, great even. She’d actually asked us in the past, not because she thought I was gay but because she is a supportive mum.
“She’d say: ‘I don’t care if you have a girlfriend or boyfriend.’ My family have been so supportive.” Despite his public admission about his sexuality, Joe says he has only ever kissed one boy – a gay pal also from South Shields.
The singer, who hit Number One with debut single The Climb, added: “I’ve kissed lots of girls but only one boy. It was nothing serious, just a one-off thing.”
He added that the two lads are no longer in contact. Rumours about Joe’s sexuality spread almost as soon as he won the telly talent contest last year.
Earlier this month someone hacked into his Twitter account to “out” him. But until last night he had always insisted: “I’m straight.”
