And so in January of 1987, the companypurchased the Forgotten Realms universe from Ed Greenwood. The company acquiredthe Forgotten Realms in exchange for a lump sum payment of $4,000 and $1,000for “the Author’s services as a design consultant.” In the contract, EdGreenwood gave up to TSR, absolutely and forever, all his rights, title, andinterest throughout the world in and to the Forgotten Realms. Grubb describedthe deal as a relatively modest amount of cash, a Macintosh II computer, and apromise to publish novels Greenwood wrote. Grubb said, “Later, when we werevery happy with him, we bought him a hard drive to go with the computer.” Giventhe value the Forgotten Realms has accrued in the decades since, the purchaseseems a steal.
