敏感性皮肤（sensitiveskin）和“皮肤过敏”是两个不同的概念，皮肤过敏是一种变态反应，由变应原进入机体后，促使机体产生相应的抗体，引发抗原抗体反应，表现为红斑、丘疹、风团等临床客观体征，常伴瘙痒。而敏感性皮肤是一种高度不耐受的皮肤状态，易受到各种因素的激惹而产生刺痛、烧灼、紧绷、瘙痒等主观症状，皮肤外观正常或伴有轻度脱屑、红斑和干燥。以化妆品为例，皮肤过敏是在使用某些产品后出现致敏现象；而敏感性皮肤则表现为对所有化妆品均不能耐受，其产生的机制主要包括：神经传导功能增强、皮肤屏障功能下降、血管扩张和炎症介质释放等。
